Welcome to Samphire Class!

We are so excited to welcome you to Year 5. Samphire Class is named after the beautiful Samphire Hoe, a place known for resilience, growth and discovery; values which we hope to inspire in all of our children throughout the year.

This year promises to be full of creativity, curiosity and unforgettable learning experiences. In English, we will journey through a range of exciting texts including Cloud Tea Monkeys, Oliver Twist, Beowulf, Harry Potter, The Phantom of the Opera and The Sound of Music. Our writing will include suspense stories, persuasive adverts, newspaper reports, diary entries, adventure narratives and even instructional writing inspired by catching the mysterious Phantom!

In History, we will travel through time to explore the Victorians, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, discovering how people lived, worked, travelled and shaped Britain. We will even design and build our own Viking longships. In Geography, we will investigate global trade and economics before venturing into the Alps to learn about mountain life, tourism and climate.

Our Science learning will encourage us to think like scientists as we investigate materials, forces, Earth and space, living things and the human body. In Computing, we will become digital creators by composing music, creating stop-motion animations, programming Micro:bits and even exploring how Mars Rovers collect and transmit data in space.

Creativity is at the heart of Samphire Class. Throughout the year, we will develop our artistic skills through printing inspired by William Morris, Bayeux Tapestry drawings, textile sail-making, sculpture and painting inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe. We will also continue our ukulele lessons and regularly take the time to sing as a class.

Alongside all of this, we are incredibly excited for our 10:10 List; ten memorable experiences chosen by the children to make Year 5 extra special.

We cannot wait for a fantastic year of learning, laughter, creativity and adventure together.
